Genre Research: Multiple Genres: To Our Genres

Multiple to Our Genres

After the many genres that we have went through we have decided on one that we will use for the beginning. The genre that is going to be the opening genre of the two minute movie will be anti-romance, it will have similar conventions to the drama theme. The romance aspect will be when the two characters are eating. When we decided on a theme or genre to use we decided on romance but without the common themes like a working relationship. So, we decided on anti-romance and a crime underlayer. We will include crime aspects and romance aspects and have an underlying of drama course of the diverse ways you can use these genres. The props will be much like a crime while also sticking to the romance theme. The settings will also be like the drama genre.

The elements I like are...

  •  the different aspects of the genre you can play with like the settings and the different types of characters

The elements I don't like are...

  • the repetitive ness within the genre, most movies are the same with similar concepts.

  • Romance:
    This is an example:

    CLAMPS or (mise-en scene)
    C- Camera angles:

    •  many low angle shots when looking at the bullies of the protagonist

    • jump cuts
    • action match
    • action match

    The elements are...

    • common settings are nice places
    • the lighting is bright and colorful when their happy and dim when they are sad
    • the characters are  usually the stereotypical types like a strong by with a soft heart an a girl with a tough exterior with a nice heart

    The elements I like are...

    •  the different aspects of the genre you can play with like the settings and the different types of characters

The elements I don't like are...
    • the repetitive ness within the genre, most movies are the same with similar concepts.
Things they may both have or things that may be unique to the genre.

Common camera angles: They both have:

    • Over the shoulder shots
    • high angle shots when making a character smaller
    • low angle shots when making a character bigger
    • wide angle shots (like most film genres)
    • many person shots for instance...
    • two person shot of both of the leading actors
    • three person shot of the female or males friends
    • establishing shots of the many places
    • tilts for buildings to the people
    • pan shots of the beautiful place the people may be vacationing
    • track shot when the characters angrly storm away from a location or when they are running to let off steam
    • zoom out when they run to each other for a kiss or hug
Common Mise-en-scene: They might both have:

    • places that a beautiful or build on character development like a familiar place to the character that builds the mood of the movie
    • the makeup is usually like but in some scenes that make the female lead character stand out they may do amore heavy makeup for the enhanced "beauty" of the charractor
    • the settings can be several to only a couple the lead characters visit. For instance if its in a school setting ,they may only interact there ,and possibly their home or when they go on a date.
    • There can be a recurring pattern to the script like the female is clumsy or the male is headstrong.
    • The props are very similar with this genre due the many similarities, however if  in the drama someone is dying or dies the props would be for a funeral and would be very dramatic. For romance movies it would be like a big wedding and all the stuff that goes into a beautiful wedding would need to be there.
Common editing in your genre: They both have:

    • Many jump cuts
    • inserts (texting)
    • action matches
    • eye-line match
    • split screens
    • transitions that can move..
    • swipe transitions
    • fade out
    • fade in
Elements of the genre: They might both have:

    • Can be a strong female lead and a weak male lead
    • Can be a bad boy and a good girl
    • Can be a strong female lead and a strong male lead to where they both contradict each other but at the end work
    • the settings are like previously stated
    • For the drama however there is usually a breakup and get back together scene or the female character (or  male) moves on with their life.
    • For the Romance there is scenes that are affectionate with each other and possibly scenes where they fight and make up
    Common sounds:

    • classical music when they are somewhere fancy
    • sad music when the mood of the scene is sad
    • happy or up-beat music when they are doing something fun
    • there can be a sound bridge to add the effect that a situation has happened before or it connects two scenes together
    • there can be the sounds of the wedding bells for when they get married or the classical wedding  hymn
What elements of the genre you like:
I like the different things you can do with the two genres and due to the similarities lots of times the movie that is a romantic movie has also a drama aspect to it to add more emotion to the plot and deepen the story.  I like the idea of a Drama manly due to the many ways you can make them, they can be sad and happy at the same time. The Drama genre can take the audience through many emotions at the same time through the different scenes. And the Romance genre can even out the movie with a happy ending.

What don't you like about it:
I don't like how most of the moves for these genres are so similar to each other, Drama can be sad and happy and Romance has a happy ending.

Why did you choose this genre : These genres can be stand alone movies or can be combined due to the many similarities, the different ways my group can shape our ideas to this genre makes it the best option.
    Ideas about it:
My group won't be making a Romance movie like the example above, our movie will challenge the Romance movie conventions ,and stay closer to the Drama genre (while adding a few romance aspects inside).

    Genre Research: Digging into Crime

    Crime

This was about the film genre Crime. During our time researching,we discovered that there are many sides to this one genre. For the lighting aspect it's mainly low and dim lighting. This is usually focused on the setting, to deepen the shadows, and highlight the characteristics the director wanted to bring out. The characters can be very three dimensional or very one sided. The CLAMPS of the Crime genre are as follows. CLAMPS stands for Camera, Lighting, Acting, Make-up, Props, and Setting. The Camera angles are relatively low when there is high angle shots it's mainly to make the protagonist small in the lighting. The lighting was previously stated. The acting is usually very intense. Make up is heavy depending on what the director wants to show, when there is blood there is usually lots. Props are plentiful in this genre, from knives to the different props used by the cops. Settings are also plentiful in this genre, this adds character development and also depth to the movie as well.

    Throwing Our Pitches

    Throwing Our Pitches

    Plan #3
Pitch: Girl who doesn’t believe in god or faith in general, accidentally became the devil, and wants revenge for her past.

    Plan #4

Pitch: A movie star couple never seem to get along, except when they are eating a meal with each other, people everywhere wonder why ,until a reporter winds up dead with parts missing and them missing.

For these pitches our ideas are that both of these options have some sort of crime and Horror-ish feelings. These options are both original ideas that haven't been done before so we won't get side-tracked by feelings from other movies. Theses ideas both have similar features like similar lighting strategies and prop ideas. We all decided on the #4 idea due to the simplicity and also the fun and innovative ideas. We didn't want to constantly run around to look for the different settings and the props. With this one we can have fun and I can have fun making the props. The different lighting and fun effects will be my job. I will be incharge of the music with makeup and costumes will be new and exciting for me. This will be a horror and crime theme movie. This means lots of dark lighting and suspense music or sounds. I will be trying to compose music that will fit our theme and bring those feeling to life.
The reason why we didn't choose the #3 one was due to the many settings that we planned to incorporate into that piece. Along with the different things we were going to incorporate but might be offensive and we didn't want to take a chance. We want this movie to be a good one that many people can watch and enjoy. Even though it is a horror film we want all viewers to enjoy it with as little offensive content as possible. The third would also be very hard to explain everything about the movie in the way we want without the use of extreme special effects. The fourth one is also way more fun for both the actors and people behind the camera. The fourth on doesn't need many settings one one or two sites will be needed for the whole thing making it a project everyone can film and be at. All the hands we have will be on this project making sure we use and mature our skills for the better. With all of our different talents showing we can make something good.

    Starting Final Task

    Starting Final Task

For this final project we will be doing the first few minutes (2) of the movie we will be creating. With this we have made pitches that we will chose from that will fit to what we want to do. The themes are mainly horror but we also have some that has a tad of romance and mystery (I.e crime. I’m working with a group of four, counting myself. In this group will be Victoria, Jaheim, Andrea, and I (Emily). I will be the director of this along with the producer of the music and costumes. I can’t wait to start filming and create a whole new movie right from our ideas. The props will be realistic. The music will pertain to how the scenes will play out.
In this class I have learned several things that pertain to media studies. Editing was the most difficult to do in this group. Since we are a bunch of creative people, we want to do the most. However, with the time and how we payed out the storyboards time wasn’t on our side. I got to do the music videos editing and had tones of fun. Filming the music video and commercial was fun. I filmed the whole music video and added bits and pieces of my own ideas thrown into it. Make-up and props have been the main thing in on charge of. I have been doing this long before this class for drama but I have never done it on this scale. The bits and pieces that had to go into the props took a long time but taught me how to improve. I was able to bring back elements from years ago to the present time in the music video.
A pitch is not like throwing a baseball, however it can be compared to that. It’s basically a whole synopsis of the movie in under 25 words. This is also called an elevator pitch which can tell the director what the movie is about. Along have a feel over the movie before the elevator reaches the floor. We allowed space to ask questions about it and how we can improve or change it.
    Plan #1
Pitch: Girls friend winds up dead and made to look like a suicide, it’s up to her to find out what happened, or die trying.

    Plan #2
Pitch: the frat house is haunted, a group of teens think it’s smart to throw a party, little do they know the house can come to life.

    Plan #3
Pitch: girl who doesn’t believe in god or faith in general accidentally became the devil and wants revenge for her past.

    Plan #4

Pitch: a movie star couple never seems to get along, except when they are eating a meal with each other, people everywhere wonder why ,until a reporter winds up dead with parts missing and them missing.

*This is not real, these are props that are edible, these are the prototypes for the different pitch ideas.

    Editing: Music Video

Editing blog for the music video

Today we are working on the Music video. We are in the editing process and we are trying to bring the music video together. With the software PinnacleStudios we will shape the music video into our vision for the music and what it represents. We will be looking at the storyboards I made so, that the music and edits are where we want them. The storyboard will give us the initial layout of what we want the music video to look like. We will be able to see what will happen as the story progresses through the pages. When I filmed I followed the storyboard so that the music video would turn out how I wanted. This was to make sure that there was consistency throughout. I made sure to color the storyboard in the way it would be in the film so it so we knew the parts where we needed to put in it. The music was easy to follow wile I edited the initial layout of the video.
I wanted the flow to be easy to follow. So, that’s what I tried making the storyboard to be like. Last time, we filmed it like the storyboard, but edited the commercial differently. I didn’t want it to be like that time. I wanted more consistency so,I ended up editing the bear bones. I wanted it so it could be like the storyboard. When I dumped the footage i made it so that it was separate from the other footage,so we didn’t get confused. Afterward was the easiest part. Jaheim dumped the footage directly into the program (Pinnacle Studios). Then we aligned the scenes in the way it was on the storyboard.
The different things we use for the conventions and to piece them together are as follows. The different things we used in the video are as follows as well. The fade in and out was to make the transitions easier and smother for the audience. I wanted the audience to feel as if they were with them dancing and being free. So the fade in and out was to make it so the smoothness of the transitions can input a feeling. The audience will interpret that feeling in their own way. The edit we used is black and white so when we filmed, the lighting had to be good. The eye-line match was to give the audience a glimpse of what the actresses were seeing. Ending it at that was to capture more of the 50-60s vibes from their movies. The music we played will only be for 1:15 seconds due to the duration of the video has to be at that time and the end of the song perfectly falls at that time.

    Continuing filming blog: Music Video

The second filming blog for the music video

The filming for this project was done by me (Emily). I was and am in charge of costume, storyboard, and filming. Also as of now editing as well. The filming I wanted to do was based off of the story I wanted to express in the music video. This was the feeling of freedom and love. I filmed everything that was for the music video in one day. This was so we can maximize our efforts in the overall execution of the project. This was in the editing and flow of the piece.  However, since we filmed in one day the subject matter for this blog is mostly the same as the other one. This blog can give a little bit more information on the projected and estimated look of the finished product.
I wanted to use the low angled shots to get the wider effect of the scenery. This was not only for the purpose of the establishing shot, but also the feel of the video. Also in having control of the camera I was able to direct where I wanted the actresses to end up in the film.  Since the actresses move a lot in the different takes I wanted the flow to be smooth. The opportunity to use the tripod was very much taken advantage of. I enjoyed being able to make the different scenes. Since the eye-line match edit was used greatly in the 50s and 60s.( Also romance films and comedies.) The part where I added, and wanted to add this in, was for the audience. I wanted them to see what the actresses were seeing. In doing this the audience could feel what they did as well.
As I said in the previous blog the lighting of the different sets will differ. The purpose was for the feelings in each scene (they will change slightly). The overall footage from filming will have scenes in all ranges of lighting. This is so I  can pick and chose the takes for the film. It is a love song so its staged in a neutral and dull light to give it a warm feeling. This is without color so the feelings of warmth will be through acting and lighting. The acting will be for the song and the lyrics. This will tie into the overall piece. This film should be overall around 1:05-1:10 minutes. So it will be the duration of the song with lyrics. Added in will be a few seconds of the singer (Frank Sinatra) playing the piano. The ending will feel more complete this way. This also allows the credits to “roll.”
