4. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset
  • The opening gives the audience a sort of dangerous feeling to whatever the character is going to experience.
5. How does the film establish an enigma from the outset
  • With the opening being almost nothing but credits and fast pace music and visuals the audience is left wondering what going on and how this will tie into the movie.
6. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience
  • The music was used in the opening scene to maybe attract the audience to the movie with a little bit of action that the males might enjoy listening to and also seeing so they might not feel bored while watching a romance movie with their date. At this time movie dates were popular so trying to attract both the female and male audience might have been harder.
7. How has technology been used effectively?  You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

  • The opening is shaky and loosely put together, this paired with the odd angles they used gives a sense of mystery to the movie.
  • They put in an aerial shot of the tracks and center angel for higher objects making the lighting transphorm what they are shooting.
  • This leaves the audience with a sense of unease and understanding to the dangerous feeling this movie is trying to express.

Title Research: Romance: Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians

1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film

  • This was a very short opening sequence with only four titles (including names), this was the main cast the directors, and the producing company.

2. What images are prioritized in the opening sequences of the film

  • This had no direct images but it had wallpaper with an asian theme behind it.

3. What connotations do the images carry
  • The images had the underlying message that this will be a colorful and a romance movie that won't be focused on the type of romance that is scene in america, it will have the culture and style from Singapore.

4. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset

  • The many colors could symbolize the many personalities and many aspects of the culture that will be going into this movie.

5. How does the film establish an enigma from the outset

  • The audience is intrigued on how this will play out throughout the story and how these colors or symbols might be in the movie itself.

6. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience

  • The music isn't in english due to this romance trying to stray away from the American version of what a romance is. The film is trying to appeal to everyone and not just a specific race, culture, or ethnicity it's trying to show and bring in new material for everyone to enjoy.

7. How has technology been used effectively?  You might want to consider camera angles, transitions
and editing techniques.

  • Since this opening was very fast and didn't have many transitions other than a few colors or backgrounds being changed, the director was probably trying to make it fast to fit the whole story. However, it didn't really showcase any of the other factors that went into this movie like costume or other types of casting other than the main people so, the effectiveness of the title portion of the movie was lacking.

Title Research: Romance: Grease

Grease

  • They do around 34 in total (Titles) names; They have the main people at the beginning, the main cast, the main directors, the people incharge of set, the production agencies, the person who made the opening song.

3. What connotations do the images carry

  • The images are like what the adults may see at the time, like the teens trying to slick back their hair, and the girls trying to be like princesses. The images also tell the audience what time period it is (50s).
4. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset

  • The genre is shown by telling the audience they are teens when they show up at the high school. They also have many things in their rooms that teen at the time would have like posters etc.

5. How does the film establish an enigma from the outset

  • It lets the people know what they are like but not at how they all relate to each other this makes it very mysterious as to how they all fit together.
  • Also, the way the directors made their personalities show to the audience it makes the audience curious as to what kind of people are they really.

6. What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience

  • They include all of the things that the teenager at the time would be interested in like the things are for males and females or every type. for instance, they look at the people who use grease for their hair to slick it back to look cool, they show the girl whos like a disney princess and can talk to animals, they show a bad boy and him fixing his car, and they also show a girl who is punk and rebellious who doesn't wear what other people want her to wear.

7. How has technology been used effectively?  You might want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

  • The technology has been used very effectively as for the time period all this was new so the fade from the animation to the actual scene of the high school was very cool.
  • When they showed the different peoples names on the individual signs the transition was the pollution from the car to act as sort of a transition piece.
  • The way it was animated made each of the characters show their characters in a split second, with the short time they showed the characters they were able to tell the audience what they were like.

Title Research: Watch the Titles Websites

Watch the Titles Websites

Today my group and I are focusing on researching titles through a helpful website called Watch the Titles. Through this research, we hope to focus on coming up with some cool ideas to express our titles. Since our main film will be only two minutes, the idea of having titles is very important as it will take most of the time.To begin, the purpose of a title is to not only inform on who helped create the film but to also set a scene for the movie. The actual titles need to focus on naming the actors, producers and everyone who helped create the film this also includes; the main leads and the different studios that need to be mentioned. The actual shot where the title is put needs to be done with purpose to catch the attention of the audience.
This site (Watch the Titles) gives the audience, who is interested in learning about the way titles are created, a sneak peek into different movies. Also how their titles set the course and feel for the movie as a whole. This website was easy to maneuver and helped us learn many ways to go about our title. The different shots that were taken or used mad the title feel like it told the movie but left out the dialogue and the people behind it. For certain titles the feel of the movie had to be dark and scary like a horror or crime movie title. For the romance and other movie titles it held a warm feeling and had symbols within the title piece to allude to the overall aspect of the movie. this website is well organized to better introduce the main aspects of the titles. It splits it in two places the title sequences and the main Designers and Studios. This is so if we are looking for a certain person for inspiration or if we are just looking for a genre we have better access to those resources without having to do extensive research. This saves time and helps us to learn faster.
This site also has other sections for the audience to view more categories without having to look for a specific genre and or director/studio. The sections are; Feature Film, TV shows,Event titles (like for a special showing or an exclusive look into a video game or other types of media), Student projects so we can see people our skill level do titles, and a special genre just for that day of the week. This makes the audience want to return to this site due to the many ways they want to make learning fun and easy. This also help us to come to a conclusion faster and helps us figure out what we want our to look like.

This site also tells the best from the previous year (titles). This includes not only the movies and all of the genres that go into that but they also have the Titles for short films and shows. This includes new shows and movies. In each title there is an element of suspense no matter the genre that the director is doing the title has to be suspenseful so the audience wants to watch more. For a romance it has to have lots of beautiful imagery and symbols symbolizing something pertaining to the movie. A horror needs gore and something that might lead to the charractor responsible. The drama genre need to have an element of emotions, many emotions for on thing leading us to follow another thing.

Acting:

Makeup:

  • for the main characters the makeup was at a minimum to show how they weren't fancy until they went to the party

Props:

  • there were a lot of props in this movie
  • to the decor of the wedding
  • to the food
  • to the dresses
  • to the peoples clothing and purses
  • to the things in the houses
  • to the dogs and the toys

Common Sound in the movies...

  • sound of the city
  • sounds of the airport
  • sounds of the music
  • classical music
  • chinese pop music
  • voice overs
Common Editing in the movie...
  • There were many inserts
  • many jump cuts
  • there was many different transitions
Elements of the Genre in the movie...
  • the colors the director chose along with the lighting told the mood of the story quite well to the happy and bright colors to the dark and muted colors
  • The settings were gorgeous
  • london with muted colors for the past
  • singapore with its bright and many colors showing the vast culture there
  • the classroom showing a darker pallet showing incompleteness with being there from the perspective of the lead male character
  • the mahjong table to show her sills and how she choose her paths wisely and not to play not to lose but to play to win.
  • the camera angles showed the different characters personalities and styles throughout the movie. The lead character female has been shown with high angle shots at the beginning to show how she felt small witht the male leads family but the angle changes when she decides to leave him for a bit and changes from a low angel to a straight ahead and mid to wide shots of her.

What Elements of the genre did the movie have that you like...
  • I loved the wedding scene as a whole the beautiful music (voice-over), complimented the scene ,and what was going on throughout the whole piece. I was blown away at the care that the directors put in to make it look and feel like a real wedding. The props and all of the costumes and makeup was gorgeous.  The settings the director choose made every element in the movie shine to the colors they choose to the way the scenes flowed together.
What elements of the genre did the movie have that do not appeal to you...

  • I didn't like the MANY jump cuts and the constant use of inserts. For this genre and this movie I know they were just trying to appeal to the audience that watch chinese romance movies. Chinese romance movies have many inserts and jump cuts to see all the perspectives in a short amount of time while also giving the individual actor screen time but it was all to much.

How you want to challenge the conventions of the movie.

I would like to challenge the conventions by not having a distant romance theme, for instance the lighting is to bright for the over all theme that i would like to represent in my film.

The Mise-Un-Scene:

  • This was the mahjong table this showed through the constant changes and the meaning of what the quote at the beginning of the film was "don't play to not to lose but play to win."

Genre Research: Multiple Genres: To Our Genres

Multiple to Our Genres

After the many genres that we have went through we have decided on one that we will use for the beginning. The genre that is going to be the opening genre of the two minute movie will be anti-romance, it will have similar conventions to the drama theme. The romance aspect will be when the two characters are eating. When we decided on a theme or genre to use we decided on romance but without the common themes like a working relationship. So, we decided on anti-romance and a crime underlayer. We will include crime aspects and romance aspects and have an underlying of drama course of the diverse ways you can use these genres. The props will be much like a crime while also sticking to the romance theme. The settings will also be like the drama genre.

The elements I don't like are...
    • the repetitive ness within the genre, most movies are the same with similar concepts.
Things they may both have or things that may be unique to the genre.

Common camera angles: They both have:

    • Over the shoulder shots
    • high angle shots when making a character smaller
    • low angle shots when making a character bigger
    • wide angle shots (like most film genres)
    • many person shots for instance...

    • zoom out when they run to each other for a kiss or hug
Common Mise-en-scene: They might both have:

    • places that a beautiful or build on character development like a familiar place to the character that builds the mood of the movie
    • the makeup is usually like but in some scenes that make the female lead character stand out they may do amore heavy makeup for the enhanced "beauty" of the charractor
    • the settings can be several to only a couple the lead characters visit. For instance if its in a school setting ,they may only interact there ,and possibly their home or when they go on a date.
    • There can be a recurring pattern to the script like the female is clumsy or the male is headstrong.
    • The props are very similar with this genre due the many similarities, however if  in the drama someone is dying or dies the props would be for a funeral and would be very dramatic. For romance movies it would be like a big wedding and all the stuff that goes into a beautiful wedding would need to be there.
Common editing in your genre: They both have:

    • Many jump cuts
    • inserts (texting)
    • action matches
    • eye-line match
    • split screens
    • transitions that can move..
    • swipe transitions
    • fade out
    • fade in

    • Can be a strong female lead and a weak male lead
    • Can be a bad boy and a good girl
    • Can be a strong female lead and a strong male lead to where they both contradict each other but at the end work
    • the settings are like previously stated
    • For the drama however there is usually a breakup and get back together scene or the female character (or  male) moves on with their life.
    • For the Romance there is scenes that are affectionate with each other and possibly scenes where they fight and make up
    Common sounds:

    • classical music when they are somewhere fancy
    • sad music when the mood of the scene is sad
    • happy or up-beat music when they are doing something fun
    • there can be a sound bridge to add the effect that a situation has happened before or it connects two scenes together
    • there can be the sounds of the wedding bells for when they get married or the classical wedding  hymn
What elements of the genre you like:
I like the different things you can do with the two genres and due to the similarities lots of times the movie that is a romantic movie has also a drama aspect to it to add more emotion to the plot and deepen the story.  I like the idea of a Drama manly due to the many ways you can make them, they can be sad and happy at the same time. The Drama genre can take the audience through many emotions at the same time through the different scenes. And the Romance genre can even out the movie with a happy ending.

What don't you like about it:
I don't like how most of the moves for these genres are so similar to each other, Drama can be sad and happy and Romance has a happy ending.

Why did you choose this genre : These genres can be stand alone movies or can be combined due to the many similarities, the different ways my group can shape our ideas to this genre makes it the best option.
    Ideas about it:
My group won't be making a Romance movie like the example above, our movie will challenge the Romance movie conventions ,and stay closer to the Drama genre (while adding a few romance aspects inside).

    Genre Research: Digging into Crime

    Crime

This was about the film genre Crime. During our time researching,we discovered that there are many sides to this one genre. For the lighting aspect it's mainly low and dim lighting. This is usually focused on the setting, to deepen the shadows, and highlight the characteristics the director wanted to bring out. The characters can be very three dimensional or very one sided. The CLAMPS of the Crime genre are as follows. CLAMPS stands for Camera, Lighting, Acting, Make-up, Props, and Setting. The Camera angles are relatively low when there is high angle shots it's mainly to make the protagonist small in the lighting. The lighting was previously stated. The acting is usually very intense. Make up is heavy depending on what the director wants to show, when there is blood there is usually lots. Props are plentiful in this genre, from knives to the different props used by the cops. Settings are also plentiful in this genre, this adds character development and also depth to the movie as well.

    Throwing Our Pitches

    Throwing Our Pitches

    Plan #3
Pitch: Girl who doesn’t believe in god or faith in general, accidentally became the devil, and wants revenge for her past.

    Plan #4

Pitch: A movie star couple never seem to get along, except when they are eating a meal with each other, people everywhere wonder why ,until a reporter winds up dead with parts missing and them missing.

For these pitches our ideas are that both of these options have some sort of crime and Horror-ish feelings. These options are both original ideas that haven't been done before so we won't get side-tracked by feelings from other movies. Theses ideas both have similar features like similar lighting strategies and prop ideas. We all decided on the #4 idea due to the simplicity and also the fun and innovative ideas. We didn't want to constantly run around to look for the different settings and the props. With this one we can have fun and I can have fun making the props. The different lighting and fun effects will be my job. I will be incharge of the music with makeup and costumes will be new and exciting for me. This will be a horror and crime theme movie. This means lots of dark lighting and suspense music or sounds. I will be trying to compose music that will fit our theme and bring those feeling to life.
The reason why we didn't choose the #3 one was due to the many settings that we planned to incorporate into that piece. Along with the different things we were going to incorporate but might be offensive and we didn't want to take a chance. We want this movie to be a good one that many people can watch and enjoy. Even though it is a horror film we want all viewers to enjoy it with as little offensive content as possible. The third would also be very hard to explain everything about the movie in the way we want without the use of extreme special effects. The fourth one is also way more fun for both the actors and people behind the camera. The fourth on doesn't need many settings one one or two sites will be needed for the whole thing making it a project everyone can film and be at. All the hands we have will be on this project making sure we use and mature our skills for the better. With all of our different talents showing we can make something good.

    Starting Final Task

    Starting Final Task

For this final project we will be doing the first few minutes (2) of the movie we will be creating. With this we have made pitches that we will chose from that will fit to what we want to do. The themes are mainly horror but we also have some that has a tad of romance and mystery (I.e crime. I’m working with a group of four, counting myself. In this group will be Victoria, Jaheim, Andrea, and I (Emily). I will be the director of this along with the producer of the music and costumes. I can’t wait to start filming and create a whole new movie right from our ideas. The props will be realistic. The music will pertain to how the scenes will play out.
In this class I have learned several things that pertain to media studies. Editing was the most difficult to do in this group. Since we are a bunch of creative people, we want to do the most. However, with the time and how we payed out the storyboards time wasn’t on our side. I got to do the music videos editing and had tones of fun. Filming the music video and commercial was fun. I filmed the whole music video and added bits and pieces of my own ideas thrown into it. Make-up and props have been the main thing in on charge of. I have been doing this long before this class for drama but I have never done it on this scale. The bits and pieces that had to go into the props took a long time but taught me how to improve. I was able to bring back elements from years ago to the present time in the music video.
A pitch is not like throwing a baseball, however it can be compared to that. It’s basically a whole synopsis of the movie in under 25 words. This is also called an elevator pitch which can tell the director what the movie is about. Along have a feel over the movie before the elevator reaches the floor. We allowed space to ask questions about it and how we can improve or change it.
    Plan #1
Pitch: Girls friend winds up dead and made to look like a suicide, it’s up to her to find out what happened, or die trying.

    Plan #2
Pitch: the frat house is haunted, a group of teens think it’s smart to throw a party, little do they know the house can come to life.

    Plan #3
Pitch: girl who doesn’t believe in god or faith in general accidentally became the devil and wants revenge for her past.

    Plan #4

Pitch: a movie star couple never seems to get along, except when they are eating a meal with each other, people everywhere wonder why ,until a reporter winds up dead with parts missing and them missing.

*This is not real, these are props that are edible, these are the prototypes for the different pitch ideas.
